Pre-Employment Application Statement
Thank you for your interest in employment with The Mutt Hutt Ltd. Before filling out the application below, please read this statement carefully. While it is important that our employees enjoy the company of dogs and have a sense of ease in the presence of dogs, there is far more to working here.
Many applicants will tell us that they “have been around dogs all their lives” or “have always loved dogs”. While these are wonderful statements, they are quite meaningless to the work involved in running a safe, healthy and positive daycare and training facility.
What is important is a willingness to accept that no matter how many dogs you have lived with, spent time with, trained or walked, you have a lot to learn and must be willing to listen and follow direction. Sometimes, what you already know will be challenged and you will need to be flexible enough to try a new way of thinking about dogs and how they learn. Sometimes, you will have to do things that don’t come naturally or quickly and take much practice to perfect.
It is imperative that you are able to follow direction. We do not always “play” with dogs here, we “work” with dogs. The only ones allowed to play at daycare, are the dogs. As an employee, you will be charged with a huge amount of responsibility. While the dogs are playing, you will be expected to watch the ears, the tails, the posture, the eyes, the interactions, while also listening to the sounds of several dogs at once. You will be expected to learn what is okay and what is not, what to do if things are not okay and what to do if you’ve missed something that results in a serious incident.
Along with this, you will be expected to work very hard at keeping our facility clean and healthy. This means that you will sweat. You will be cleaning up a great deal of dog poop and mopping up urine. You will be sweeping, vacuuming and mopping often. You will be on your knees cleaning out crates. You will do loads and loads of laundry. You will come back the next day and have to do it all over again.
We are a constantly evolving company, which means near constant change. You MUST be flexible enough to handle changes in company structure, policy and procedure on a regular basis. We will always do what is best for the dogs.
So, in the end, what you need to work here is flexibility, a true willingness to learn, a high level of responsibility, ability to communicate honestly, customer service skills and a very positive attitude. If you are applying for this job so that you can “play with dogs all day”, we would suggest that you go to your nearest shelter and adopt a dog. If you are applying because you have a sincere interest in dog behavior, training and socialization along with a commitment to the well-being of dogs, then please continue with the application process.
