“For over a decade my business has received many awards and accolades. These awards would not be possible without the hard work of my entire staff. I am very lucky to have such a great group of people work with me and remain loyal to our mission.” ~ Becca Riker, Owner
Please meet the staff of dedicated animal enthusiasts, volunteers for Secondhand Mutts and those who are taking care of your furry friends….
Beth, Client Relations
When I was 6 years old I ran away from home because I wasn’t allowed to have a dog. My life on the lam only lasted 2 minutes but my love for dogs has only grown stronger over the years. Now I’m so lucky to be surrounded by them everyday!
I started fostering for the Cleveland Animal Protective League and Secondhand Mutts in 2008 and I met my dog Edamame in 2009. While not planning to adopt, we formed an unexpected and unbreakable bond so I became her forever home. Eda has been such a gift in my life. She is very patient and wise. I still continue to foster new dogs who are waiting to be adopted. My favorites are the puppies.
I feel so grateful to Becca and all the staff at The Mutt Hutt for bringing me on board to work at a place that I feel so passionately about. I love getting to know each new pooch that walks in the door, watching their personalities and confidence bloom and seeing familiar furry faces everyday. The 6 year old in me is having a blast!
Leah, Business Manager
Assistant Operations Manager for Secondhand Mutts
I’ve had pets going back to my very first memories. I had the best-ever dog Daisy (a fuzzy, black mutt) growing up and also grew to love big dogs because of my grandmother’s German Shepherds. While I am a dog-lover, I don’t quite have the lifestyle/time for a dog right now. Instead, I have two cats and enjoy volunteering with organizations like Secondhand Mutts to get my “dog fix”…which is what led me to doing some bookkeeping and other administrative work for TMH. I love seeing and getting to know all of your pooches as they get dropped off and picked up for grooming, daycare and boarding!

The companionship of a dog will always be valued in my life and I’m grateful to extend that appreciation to others at The Mutt Hutt. There is a gratification that comes along with providing each dog that walks through the door an opportunity to have fun and create lasting connections. Along with leading a passionate philosophy I am proud to assist Secondhand Mutts in the rehabilitation of their rescue dogs. Moon, who I adopted from Secondhand Mutts in 2012, is a pit bull that breaks the mold of a breed too often misunderstood and reason to continue the effort of respecting the dog.

Kendra, Team Supervisor
Hi I’m Kendra! I absolutely love working with animals and am so excited to be apart of the Mutt Hutt team! I recently moved to Cleveland after graduating from Kent State University with a degree in Zoology. I also just recently got a golden retriever puppy named Cooper. He is only 10 weeks old now but he can’t wait til he is old enough to come to the Mutt Hutt to play with all the other dogs! I also have two cats at home, Lily and Norah. I love looking forward to work each day!
Nathan, Team Supervisor
I’ve been involved with The Mutt Hutt and Secondhand Mutts since 2013 and it’s been nothing but a rewarding experience. It’s amazing to be able to do something I’m so passionate about for a living; meeting dogs with different personalities, sizes, and breeds makes each day a fun and engaging challenge. I’m a father to a young (human) baby named Newton, as well as two rescued Shar-Pei mixes named Judy and Roscoe (all of whom keep me on my toes!) I’m a graduate of Cleveland Institute of Art, and in my free time I make comics/freelance illustration and play in a few bands. I hope to apply my passion and experience to making your dog(s) have the most enriching experience possible at The Mutt Hutt.
Katie, Client Relations, Pack Leader & Overnight Supervisor
I’m Katie and I have been with The Mutt Hutt since 2012. I enjoy being a part of a second “family” for your dogs to spend time with during daycare or their boarding stay. Being able to provide structure, love, and attention to the many different dogs during the day is truly my dream job. I have never worked in a place I enjoyed so much. I have owned some form of furry animal all of my life whether it was a Great Dane, a hamster, a few rescued cats, or even a pack of baby opossums that were rescued and then released back into the wild. I now share my life with my wife April and we currently have our own little “zoo” containing 3 dogs, 3 cats, 2 turtles, and 2 children and I lead the pack. I was taught from an early age that every animal matters and should be loved and treated just like family. I hope to also keep teaching this to my own 2 girls as they continue to grow up.
I will continue to look forward to being a part of The Mutt Hutt and helping with Secondhand Mutts in the years to come! Thank you for being awesome clients, past and present, and allowing me to be a part of your dog’s life here at The Mutt Hutt!
Dave, Pack Leader
I am a father of five adult children, and one rescued Pit bull, and eleven rescued cats. I used to be a teacher and I’m also a semi retired registered nurse. I’m still an active volunteer as a dog walker for the Cleveland Animal Protective League. In the summer time, I like to participate in 5K runs with my dog Lucy. The two of us are both animal activists. When I’m not working at The Mutt Hutt, I’m busy playing the trumpet and watching movies with my grand daughter. I really enjoy coming to work everyday and getting to learn more about dog behavior and watching the different personalities mix.
Noah, Pack Leader & Certified Dog Trainer
My life with dogs did not begin until 2011, when my wife and I adopted a four month old pit bull/lab mix named Boomer. The process of raising Boomer changed my understanding of the power dogs can have in our lives. We have since adopted a white German Shepherd/Labrador Retriever mix, Daisy, whose anxiety and fear aggression prompted my interest in dog behavior and rehabilitation.
In 2014 I left my career in healthcare to complete the Master Trainer Course at National K9 Learning Center and returned to Northeast Ohio to open CLE Dog Training. I am excited to join the Mutt Hutt family and look forward to providing an enriching experience for your dog.
Hi, I’m Scott. I’m a recent addition to the Mutt Hutt team (April 2015) and am enjoying it immensely. I absolutely love being able to work with all the different breeds, temperaments, and personalities that are brought in on a daily basis.
I grew up with dogs and was a good pack leader even before I understood what that meant. I’ve since completed an apprenticeship in animal training and have worked with and learned from several professional dog trainers including Cleveland’s own Darwin Dog’s owner Kerry Stack.
My purpose here at the Mutt Hutt is to help insure that everyone’s dogs continue to have a safe and enjoyable experience. As a trainer I rely heavily on positive reinforcement methods and am always willing to accommodate a dog that needs a little extra attention.
Sam, Pack Leader & Overnight Stay Supervisor
I have always wanted to work with dogs. I used to volunteer for Secondhand Mutts when I was little. I have also volunteered for PAWS. Everyone have always called me if they found a stray dog. All the dogs I have ever had I have rescued. I love being around dogs. I love working with them and getting to know them. I love my job!
Wayne, Pack Leader
Hi, my name is Wayne! Working with animals has always been a dream job for me… until now! I’m a recent addition to The Mutt Hutt team and am very happy to be on board. I love all animals, especially dogs and I’m an advocate for animal rights. As a kid i was never able to have a dog of my own so i make up for lost time by surrounding myself with them all day. Over the years I have traveled across the country multiple times with different breeds and owners so I’m no stranger to “pack mentality”. I’m also a step-dog-dad of 2 rescued pit bull boys. I’m learning about training and personality traits of different dogs while working at The Mutt Hutt.
Albert, Pack Leader & Overnight Stay Supervisor
Albert. I’m the new addition at the Mutt Hutt and I’m having a great time working with these wonderful animals. I have over 15 years working in the service dog industry. On a personal note, scent hounds are my passion and I’m the proud owner of a 3 year old Treeing Walker Hound named, Owen. Over the years I’ve worked with and learned from some great trainers and behaviorists, including Jane Miller, Exec. Dir. of Healing Companions. I rely on positive reinforcement methods and hope that my previous experience will help your dog’s stay here at the Mutt Hutt be much more enjoyable.
Jim, Grooming Salon Assistant & Client Relations
I am a long-time resident of Tremont and passionate animal lover. I joined The Mutt Hutt team in July 2013 starting out as a Grooming Salon Assistant. I do much of the behind-the-scenes work in the operation including Pack Leader, Salon Assisting and being an administrative assistant.
I grew up with a wide variety of animals, everything from fish and hamsters to goats and horses and many in between! After spending most of my life in the law enforcement field, I believe I have found his niche in the “instant gratification that comes with making dogs look and feel better.” I currently own two dogs: a Toy Poodle named Claudette, he adopted from Secondhand Mutts and a black German Shepherd named Baron. I also own two rescue cats, Bell and Cameo.
I’m so excited to have joined the wonderful staff here at The Mutt Hutt. I am a Cleveland native, and have loved animals my whole life. I have had several pets over the years including cats, parakeets, a colar lizard, an African Spur-leg Tortoise, hamsters, and of course, dogs.
I was working in a pharmaceutical laboratory after finishing school, and after several years, grew bored with that line of work. I decided to change careers, and become a dog groomer. I received my grooming certification from The Ohio Academy of Pet Styling in 2010, and have been pampering pooches every since.
I currently live in Lakewood with my two Chihuahuas: Chico and Chuckie. As well as my cat Peaches. Coming into work each day is a true joy. I love spending my days with all your fur babies, bringing out their most beautiful features, and making them fluffy and fresh!
