We love dogs. We try are best not to inundate our visitors with dogs in need of homes, but from time to time we get requests from our neighbors, dog lovers and clients who want to post information about a found or lost dog that needs to find its owner or a new home. Please do not come to The Mutt Hutt as a rescue source - there are organizations that specialize in placing dogs in good homes and we can help you find them. We have listed lists shelters we know of in Northeast Ohio. We can post flyers in our lobby and always feel free to ask us if there is a dog who is looking for a home. If you are fostering a dog we are happy to list them on Pet Finder to try and find the pet a permanent home.

"Bode" |
Bode is special because he only has 3 legs! His original owners adopted him from a shelter as a young pup and raised him. The family is being deployed overseas to serve our country so Bode needs to find somewhere else to live. We took him into our cage-free environment and are giving him all the love he needs. He knows basic commands, he's housetrained and has a wonderful disposition. He does sleep on his own couch but could probably be trained to sleep on a dog bed. His birthday was December 2005. He comes with a license for Cuyahoga County for 2008. He can be microchipped upon adoption for $20.
Notes from his past owners:
I had an accident when I was 3 months old and my leg was stepped on. That caused my leg to start turning out as it grew. I had to have surgery to fix the problem and the surgeon felt strongly that removing my leg was the best way to go instead of surgery. I am very strong and its hard to believe I only have 3 legs because I get along fine. I am a high energy dog and I need to be walked at least once a day or exercised in the yard. I do need to be careful that I don't over do it though because sometimes my leg gets sore. I am completely potty trained. Usually I am let out several times a day. If I need to go I will sit by the designated door and whine if you don't notice me. I am generally placed on a leash when I go to the bathroom. I am a good listener. I understand sit, stay, go to your cage, here, nice, drop, focus, "ok" when I am allowed to eat something you are giving me outside of my normal dog food bowl, and my very favorite words are "kisses" and "treat". I also understand when I have done something bad and I will give you my best sad puppy eyes. I don't have many bad habits. I don't get on furniture or beds with the exception of my couch. Otherwise, I just like to be where you are and I will lie on the floor next to your feed. I don't chew things but my old family used to keep toys and bones for dogs around for me. I have a tendency to jump on people when they come through the door because I am excited. My family was working on commands to stop me. I have a cage and my family cages me when they are not at home. They have done this since I was little so I feel good in there.

Roger is a 5-6 month old Yellow Labrador Retriever mutt. His ears and long nose indicate he may be mixed with Great Dane. He has enormous paws and a very large head for his body size. Roger was found two weeks ago in a sealed Rubbermaid style tote with the lid on it on someone's front porch outside of Cleveland in 90 degree weather. Sandy, a local dog warden from the city he was found in, was called to the scene and the pup was barely alive. He fate was to be put to sleep but Sandy, being a lover of dogs, took him to her own vet for immediate medical treatment. She paid $949.00 to have his life saved and then contacted us for his shelter and adoption. It was only out of the kindness of her own heart and generosity of her personal bank account that we have the pleasure of knowing this sweet little pup.
We named him Roger because when he arrived at The Mutt Hutt last Friday afternoon he was so excited to see other dogs and be alive that he was literally hopping around the daycare like a rabbit. After long debate the name "Roger" was given to him after "Roger Rabbit". Currently he is being fostered to learn crate training and house breaking skills.
We are not a traditional shelter and appointments must be made to see our adoptable pets. Please call 216-621-6888 or send us an email. We have a screening process for applicants. Dogs do not go home the same day you meet them.

"Willow Jean " |
Willow Jean, a beautiful 8-9-year-old Golden Retriever mix, was found stray by Becca about a month ago on the cold, rainy streets of Cleveland. She is friendly and eager to play with the other dogs she meets, but she also loves some couch and cuddle time. Willow Jean is a medium-sized dog, weighing about 35 pounds. She is healthy and happy, just waiting for that special home to call her own. She id wonderfully in daycare and gets along with all dogs. She was transferred to the City Kennel in hopes of being reunited with her owner but they never came to claim her. Quickly, she was scooped up by the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs and is now being fostered.
If you are willing to show Willow Jean what it is like to have a loving, warm, happy home, she will repay you over and over with her unconditional love and devotion. For more information on adopting Willow Jean, please contact the Sanctuary For Senior Dogs and ask for Willow Jean!

"Crystal" |
Crystal is one of 14 dogs abandoned in a house (some of which later died due to malnutrition and disease), Crystal has come a long way in five months! Everyone who meets her thinks she's the sweetest dog they've ever met. When she's not winning friends and influencing people, she's playing or snuggling with the other dogs in her foster home, or hanging out with her foster mom. Crystal is approximately 2 years of age and weighs 50 pounds; her coloring is an unusual fawn/blue mixture with white. She loves other dogs and people and is not aggressive toward cats (though she is curious about them). She currently lives with 5 dogs and two cats and they all love her. She is very mellow, listens well, is learning to sit/stay and walks well on a leash. She knows basic commands like sit and down, is housebroken and crate trained, is up-to-date on vaccinations, and is spayed and microchipped. Her nub never stops wagging, because she's so happy to be alive and healthy and around people and dogs who love her!
For more information about Crystal, contact her foster mom, Sandy, at (216)375-0484 or Shana at the adoption agency, For the Love of Pits, at (216) 214-1149 or email: Shana@fortheloveofpits.org. |
"Abbie" |
Abbie is a female Chow-Chow that has been at the City of Cleveland Kennels for the last 3 weeks. The Foster Parents for Pooches pulled her from the kennel to give her the relief she needed. Barbie groomed her and she is feeling fresh and clean. She was matted and needed to be shaved down but has a beautiful coat. We are fostering her until Canine Advocates can find her a foster and permanent home.
If you are interested in meeting Abbie please call 216-621-6888. We only show our dogs by appointment M-F 9-4, Saturday 9-1 and other times with prior notice.
Adoption fee: $75- All proceeds are tax-deductible for Canine Advocates of Ohio

"Stevie" |
Stevie is such a happy guy, he loves everyone and is the most grateful dog you'll ever meet. When you read his story you'll know why...
Stevie was found by his guardian angel, running with a pack of stray, unwanted dogs, in the bitter cold of Cleveland. He was the smallest in the group and thus got the short end of the stick when it came to food. Steve went up to his guardian angel right away when she offered her hand with treats so she knew he was something special. Due to his cuts and injuries and emaciated look Steve's guardian angel took him straight to the vet's for immediate medical care.
We weren't sure if Steve was going to survive or not. He was beat up pretty bad and then tested positive for heartworm. The vet staff raved about how sweet he was, even as sickly as he felt, he was always gentle. After 4 weeks in the vet hospital, lots of love and attention and meds, Steve was finally given the "ok" to go "home".
Well, Steve had no home to go to! His guardian angel put a plea for help out in the rescue world and we were contacted. Of course, how can you say "no" to helping a dog with a face like Steve's?!
Steve was known as the "skinny brown dog" but we've changed that. He's fed quality food, has a warm bed to sleep on, and nice doggie friends to keep him company. Quite different from his days on the streets!
Steve has an awesome personality! Super quiet and calm and very appreciative of all the medical and emotional care he has received. Steve will make a wonderful family dog. We don't know how he is around small children, but we'll soon find out and update this listing as we do. In the meantime, won't you consider bringing Stevie into your home?
Approximate Age: 3-4 years
Approximate Weight: 42 pounds
We do adopt outside the state of Ohio. However, we require the adopting family to drive to Ohio to meet/adopt the dog applying for. Should this be more than a day's drive, we can arrange transport with the adopting family driving at least half way.
